YOUTH RUGBY PROGRAMS
A place for every player—from a first introduction to rugby through advanced preparation for the next level. No prior rugby experience is required.
TWO SEASONS, ONE DEVELOPMENT PATH
SPYRC offers Spring 15s and Fall 7s. Spring provides the club’s full age-group program, while Fall 7s offers a faster, condensed format for older players. Specific dates, divisions, and registration links are published before each season.
U6 & U8 — FIRST EXPERIENCES
Our youngest players learn through movement, teamwork, games, and age-appropriate non-contact rugby. U8 players may participate in tag scrimmages. These divisions are co-ed and designed to make a child’s first experience with rugby positive and fun.
U10 — BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
Players develop core skills, safe contact habits, teamwork, and confidence in a structured environment. The emphasis remains on learning the game and becoming comfortable making decisions under pressure.
U12 — DEVELOPING COMPLETE PLAYERS
U12 players continue building technical skills and game understanding through full-contact competition. Travel begins at U12, and matches are generally played on Sundays.
U14 — CONFIDENCE AND GAME UNDERSTANDING
Separate boys and girls opportunities allow players to strengthen technique, communication, tactical awareness, and leadership. Players compete without a tryout or selection process.
U16 & U19 — PREPARING FOR HIGHER LEVELS
Older athletes train for meaningful competition and the standards expected in high school, representative, and collegiate rugby. Boys and girls programs are not co-ed. Sunday match schedules may require regional travel.
FALL 7s
Fall 7s is open to returning U14-and-older boys and U16 and U19 girls. The ability to field each girls team depends on registration numbers. Fall practices are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30–8:00 p.m.
RED WOLVES — ELITE PLAYER PATHWAY
The Red Wolves pathway is intended for advanced players who want additional skill development and preparation for collegiate, representative, and potentially professional rugby. Future participation may include a selection process as the pathway develops.
CLUB TEAM IDENTITIES
SPYRC team identities include the Riddlers, Jesters, Jokers, and Harlequins. These names reflect the club’s history and established place in the Southern Pines community.
WHAT PLAYERS NEED
Every player should bring a properly fitted mouthguard, rugby-appropriate cleats, and a personal water source. Match jerseys are issued by the club and must be cared for and returned as directed.
MATCHES, TRAVEL, AND EVENTS
Match days are generally Sundays. U12 and older teams travel for competition. Tournament participation varies by team and season; there is no universal tournament requirement for every player.
BEYOND THE SEASON
SPYRC offers free offseason clinics and participates in club and community events when opportunities are available. Confirmed clinics, camps, and special events are posted through Heja, the website, and club social media.
